Now You Can Compare Supplements Based On The Delivered Prices

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

We’ve updated our search results to allow you to compare products based on the total price you pay - that is the cost of both the product and delivery to your door.

It makes quite a diference and some of the apparently “cheap” bulk suppliers aren’t quite as cheap when you factor in the delivery cost. Worth thinking about!

For example compare the whey protein prices including delivery and excluding delivery.

ZMA supplements explained

Friday, September 18th, 2009

As a regular gym goer, I’m always looking at different supplements and wondering “would that increase my performance in the gym”. I guess the best thing anyone can do is ask others what experience they have of using certain supplements, and compare that with the scientific evidence (if any) that backs up the claims made by supplement manufacturers.

So what is ZMA and how does it work?

ZMA typically means Zinc Monomethionine Aspartate, Magnesium Aspartate, and vitamin B-6. All minerals which are very useful for anyone doing intense exercise, especially weight-lifting.

The way that ZMA supplements work, is that it doesn’t increase the level of testosterone production in the body, but it helps to rebuild levels of these minerals which are depleted during intense exercise.

So if you didn’t supplement with ZMA, you’re body would start to have lower than normal levels of Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B-6, which in turn would lead to lower testosterone production. So by supplementing, you help the body to keep its’ testosterone levels at the right level - which should be higher than normal if you are doing big compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, bench and pull ups!

High Protein Cereal

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Breakfast is probably the most important meal of the day, yet for many of us it is (or was before we started training) not terribly nutritious. The problem is quite simple, for years we’ve been conditioned to think that a proper breakfast is a bowl of cereal and a piece of toast (with jam) is the right way to begin our day.

The truth is that such a breakfast is heavily weighted towards high GI carbohydrates and lacks protein. This high GI breakfast of cereal is literally killing us according to an article in the Telegraph which cites research from Harvard Medical School.

So what’s the answer? Well personally I’m all in favour of either a whey protein shake with some ultra fine scotch oats or egg on toast. However not everyone fancies that so what’s the alternative? How about high protein breakfast cereals? Essentially these are breakfast cereals which are high in protein. The added protein helps lower the GI of the meal and gives you a better start to the day.

The other alternative to high protein cereals is high protein oatmeal it’s a bit like scotch oats and whey - how about that hey! :-)

Primaforce Elastamine Review

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I have recently been suffering with some knee pains, most likely bought on by the weight training I do, specifically squatting and thus decided to buy a top quality joint care supplement.

It was through the research I had been doing into the various products that we have listed in our database that I became aware of Primaforce Elastamine, a blended joint complex containing MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

As you can see from the results, the Primaforce Elastamine is the cheapest product when sorted by price / amount, one of, but not the only reason I chose it!

Having now used the product for best part of three weeks, and having continued to squat / deadlift etc, I am now feeling that my knees and other joints are much better than they were before I started taking it.

My Protein MP MAX ONE Promilk RTD added

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

We’ve been informed today of the release of a new ready-to-drink (RTD) milk protein supplement from My Protein. The new product is called MP MAX ONE Promilk RTD and is available to buy as a single ready to drink bottle, or a pack of eight bottles. In fact they look more like milk cartons but we’ve listed them as bottles for clarity sake!

Only My Protein will be stocking these new products, but you can see that when compared against other products in the “milk isolate” category, this product comes out top.

Cheapest Creatine Monohydrate Powder

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

I recently bought some more creatine monohydrate powder as I’d ran out of my previous stock, which I’d bought from My Protein. Amazingly a 500 gram pouch lasted me from January until the end of August, though I think some of the reason for this is that I wasn’t taking enough. I’ve since reviewed my creatine intake and decided to take a bigger dose each day!

I searched through our results and the cheapest creatine monohydrate powder I could find was Optimum Health Ultimate Creatine. The result shows that there may have been some cheaper alternatives from Bulk Powders, but when you factor in their delivery charge, the price would have been more.

We will be implementing delivery prices to our system in the next few days, such that you will be able to perform price comparisons including the cost of delivery, which should make the system more useful!

Why Do We Want Discount Supplements?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Sooner or later someone is bound to ask why we’re all that bothered about finding discount supplements. So we thought we’d beat them to it and provide the answer.

It’s simple really. We’re both in our 30’s with three mortgages, two marriages, one kid, one dog and one divorce between us. Throw in a little debt for seasoning and you get the flavour of our lives.

We’ve also realised that our geek lifestyle has been slowly contributing to the steady loss of muscle and equally steady accumulation of fat.

The answer? More exercise! So we both returned to weight training after (far to many) years off. We also took a long hard look at our diets and recognised the need for improvement, not least of which was more protein to help build and maintain muscle mass.

So we started looking at protein shakes and found there are hundreds to choose from ranging in price from nearly £30/Kg to a more modest £6.50/Kg - hitting just about every other price point in between. Being frugal we wanted to find the best quality protein at the lowest price and it occurred to us that there was huge scope for a site to help atheletes find cheaper, alternates to the big brand supplements or just discount deals on the big brand supplements.

Our First Beta Goes Live!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The first beta release of Discount Supplements Guide has just gone live - hurray!

So what does this mean?

Well it means we believe we’ve created a working, usuable site, but we need to let a few real users use it and find out if they think it’s useful. We also need to spend some time adding more suppliers to the database in order to ensure that we provide the best possible coverage. At the moment we’ve included:

  • My Protein
  • LA Muscle
  • Bulk Whey
  • Affordable Supplements
  • Bulk Powders
  • Bargain Supplements

More will be added in the next few days - so far we have a list of over 40 suppliers that we intend to add, but if you think we might have missed a supplier just let us know!

We’re doing it for our poor MPs

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Can you imagine how hard it must be to survive as an MP? You have to exist on a meager £64,766 (source) which is pitifully low, how can anyone be expected to live off that and buy their monthly ration of protein, creatine and BCAAs? Well if you manage to blag a role on a select committee, a cabinet minster or the prime minister you can elevate that to £79,132, £144,520 or £197,689 respectively.

Obviously anyone would struggle to survive on that, so MPs have to muddle through using their £100,205 (source) staffing allowance to employ their near destitute family and claiming their £22,193 in incidental expenses for those annoying costs they have to bear that us commoners don’t. You know like, mortgages, mistresses or even houses for their ducks!

So that’s why we’re building the Discount Supplements Guide, we’re helping our poor MPs - they need it, after all how would you cope if you only earned what they do? Could you afford your sports supplements on their meager wage?
